Jaw pain, clicking and tooth wear do not always have the same cause. Specialised assessment distinguishes problems involving teeth, muscles and the jaw joint.
The consultation explores when symptoms occur, what worsens them and whether opening is restricted. Not every click needs intervention, but pain and locking should be assessed.
The assessment examines jaw movement, muscles, bite and signs of tooth wear. The plan may include habit changes, guided exercises or a custom mouthguard. For a mouthguard, impressions are taken, the fit is checked and its use explained. Follow-up reviews symptoms and bite contacts, with input from another specialist when needed.
Attend reviews and report changes in symptoms or appliance fit. A guard does not automatically resolve every type of jaw pain. Sudden difficulty opening the mouth needs prompt assessment.
Your plan and quotation are determined after examination. Complexity, materials, preliminary treatment and follow-up visits affect timing and cost. Ask for a written plan explaining what is included.
Not for every concern. The cause of symptoms and the usefulness of an appliance are assessed first.
No. Muscles, the joint and other conditions may contribute. Examination guides treatment or referral.
Not without a diagnosis. Irreversible tooth changes need careful consideration; the first aim is to understand the cause of symptoms.
Bring your medication list and any available dental examinations. Note your concerns and questions; your dentist will decide whether further investigations are needed.
